Development problems of underground space in Russian cities

The first International Forum «Integrated development of city's underground space as a major direction of government development of territories» will be held in St. Petersburg in June, 2012. It was organized by self-regulating company (Not-for-profit Partnership) «Association of underground builders», OAO «Metrostroy», Committee for the development of underground space (the National Association of Builders - NOSTROI) and Tunnel Association of Russia. The forum will be attended by 500 Russian and foreign experts on urban planning and construction of underground facilities, executive and legislative of all levels authorities, potential investors.
The aim of the Forum is to accelerate the integrated development of underground space in Russian cities. Modern trends in urban compaction and a high concentration of transport put the Russian cities on the brink of crisis, for it’s overcome requires fundamentally changing of urban planning principles. Matters of creating a comfortable and environmentally safe infrastructure, and preservation of cultural and historical heritage successfully solve by using underground space.
Organizers in their greetings to the forum’s participants say that the problem of poorly development of underground infrastructure in Russia becomes more acute today.
«The development of underground space in major cities across the country is insufficient rates, and it is impossible to delay the issue further. Developed underground infrastructure will actually improve the transport situation, save historic appearance of the cities and make them more convenient and comfortable for people,» said the General Director of OAO «Metrostroy», Vadim Alexandrov.
«Our task – show to government representatives that problem solving of major cities, including transport, territorial and environmental, is impossible without underground construction. It isn’t alternatives to underground construction, because ground-based resources exhausted their potential,» underlined the General Director of self-regulating company (Not-for-profit Partnership) «Association of underground builders», Sergei Alpatov.
The forum’s programm includes an exhibition, in which the best examples and perspective projects of Russian and foreign civil engineering, plenary and breakout sessions, seminars and business meetings will be presented. In the course of the workshops, participants will discuss sensitive issues about urban planning, legal issues of underground construction and investment, HR – training for specialists in underground construction, and energy efficiency of underground facilities.
Forum’s participants will share their respective experiences of development of underground space and talk about the actual problems of ecology, transport and engineering infrastructure of cities in their reports.
The Forum was supported by the Ministry of Regional Development of Russia Federation, the National Association of Builders (NOSTROI), The National Association of Designers (NOP) and the National Association of Prospectors (NOIZ).
